How a food truck changed everything

Collage: Godwill with the Namash family, Jamal at the Dream On Gala, the team at Mijomboni School

At a market fair in Salt Lake City, three years ago, I stopped to grab lunch at the Namash Swahili Restaurant food truck. The owner's husband, Ishmael, spotted my Dreamers Wish Foundation shirt and said, "There's someone you need to meet."

That someone was Jamal, his nephew visiting from Kenya: a former refugee who never forgot the children he left behind. He asked for our help reaching schools in his village, where extreme poverty had stolen too many futures.

For the past three years, Jamal has served as our Country Director in Kenya. Together, alongside local teachers, parents, headmasters and community leaders, we've transformed Mijomboni School:

  • 1,500 children served
  • 60 desks delivered
  • A computer lab, with teacher and student training
  • A 20% increase in school attendance
  • Girls no longer missing school because of period poverty

And we're just getting started. For $10 you can keep a girl in school. For the price of showing up, you can change a life. The children are waiting. Will you come?
